?Dog Training: wise investment or waste of money

It is important to understand that dog training is similar to preventative maintenance.  Training him today with the guidance of a professional trainer will save you financial loss tomorrow.  Failure to implement obedience can lead to destroyed furniture, angry neighbors, a stinky house, or G-d forbid a lawsuit.  Unfortunately, many of my clients call me after one of these disasters strike, despite the fact that they saw the warning signs and decided not to pay a small fraction of the price that the outcome ended up costing

?How do I know if the trainer is any good

Many of my clients find me after other dog trainers have proven unsuccessful.  The reason is usually because there are by in large two types of trainers.  The first type are what I call “soft trainers” who rely almost solely on food and toys to lure the dog into complying with commands and almost never use corrections.  These “trainers” won’t say “No” to their dog.  The end result is a spoiled dog that doesn’t listen to commands unless the owner bribes him with treats

The other type of trainer is the “tough guy trainers” who mold the dog’s behavior by using almost primarily choke chains and corrections.  This causes the dog to become fearful of his owner and constantly under pressure when asked to execute a command

A good dog trainer knows how to balance the two methods.  A good trainer knows when to reward with food and when to give a correction for disobedience

It’s also important to understand that just because a dog trainer can teach a dog cool tricks, doesn’t necessarily mean that they can get a wild dog to stop barking, jumping, or acting aggressive
